What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is inserted into the jawbone where a tooth used to be. There, it mimics the lost root, and directly bonds to the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant is firmly in place, it can be topped with a restoration to restore the visible portion of a tooth, using a crown, bridge, or denture.
The 4 Step Dental Implant Process
- Consultation: We’ll evaluate your mouth to see if you would be a good candidate for implants and answer any questions you might have.
- Placement: Your implant post(s) will be surgically placed into your mouth by Dr. Rojas.
- Healing: Over the course of a few months, your mouth will heal, and the implant will bond with your jaw.
- Restoration: Rojas will finish by attaching your new teeth to the implants using a connector called an abutment.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Because implants are rooted within the jaw, they are extremely stable and never slip out of place.
- Unlike other dental restorations, implants support the jaw from within, which can prevent bone loss.
- Implants have no obvious attachments to keep them in place, so they blend seamlessly to create a natural-looking smile.
- While a regular denture or bridge can be expected to last for about 7-10 years, implants last for about 30 years on average.
Who Can Dental Implants Help?
Missing Single Tooth
An implant can be placed between two healthy teeth and topped with a crown without disturbing the surrounding dental structure. This approach is much less invasive compared to a traditional bridge.
Missing Multiple Teeth
Rather than attaching a bridge to the remaining teeth near the missing ones, the prosthetic can be supported by just two implants to restore several teeth in a row.
Missing All Teeth
With just four to eight implants, a full denture can be attached to the jaw, giving it a look, fit, and strength that simply cannot be matched by a regular removable denture. We can upgrade an existing denture to fit over implants or provide a completely new prosthetic if necessary.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants
Dental implants can be a sizeable investment in your smile, but they are worth every penny because they offer the closest thing to real teeth and last several times longer compared to other options. The cost for each procedure will differ depending on a patient’s needs, but generally, implants tend to help patients save money over time because they don’t have to replace their teeth periodically like with regular bridges and dentures.
